How We Help

The classes offered in our Women’s Education Center open doors and introduce guests to a world of possibilities.

This year, the Women’s Education Center enrolled 340 English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students in 658 on-site and virtual classes. Our students also learned in computer labs, through teaching phone calls and by using app-based educational software through their phones.

Volunteer teachers, tutors and substitutes are trained by staff members to teach classes customized to meet the everyday needs of women seeking to create lives in the United States.

Women’s Education Center Students Write Seasons of Learning!

As Winter turned to Spring, ESOL students in our Women’s Education Center turned the new language they learned in our Winter Writing Café, into original pieces of writing about the four seasons. From seeing snow for the first time to fond summer memories of picnics on the beach, students worked with our volunteer teachers to practice and improve their English writing skills.

We compiled their work into a beautiful chapbook entitled Seasons of Learning, that was thoughtfully designed by our friend John Rodzvilla of Emerson College Pub Lab and generously printed and bound by our friends at Bridgeport National Bindery. This year marks the tenth edition of our Women’s Education Center book!

Students dedicated the book with the following inscription: “We dedicate this book to the students, staff and teachers of Rosie’s Place. Everybody is friendly and the teachers are always available to help us. Every week, we learned something new. We learned new vocabulary, how to write paragraphs, how to write a story and how to type. This semester is very important to us because it helped us learn more English. We learned a lot about the seasons. We learned about activities and holidays in the seasons. They are very different in different countries! The new vocabulary helped us communicate what we like and don’t like. When we started here, we spoke and wrote less. Now we can speak and write more. Learning more English opens opportunities for everything. We say thank you to everyone at Rosie’s Place for this opportunity!”

The Rosie’s Place community celebrated the work of our amazing students and volunteer teachers with author readings and a reception in our Dining Room.
